Rhodes Scholar Anthropology and Ethnography
Rebecca Richards is an Aurora Internship Program alumna. She worked as an anthropology intern in 2009/10 at the Australian Legal Rights Movement and South Australian Native Title Services. Following that, she became the first Indigenous Australian to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, having applied after learning about the Scholarship through Aurora’s Indigenous Scholarships publications.
Rebecca completed her Master’s of Material Anthropology and Museum Ethnography at Oxford in 2013. She was named the 2012 Young South Australian of the Year.
“My Aurora internship was crucial in gaining greater understanding of the applicability of my studies in anthropology to Aboriginal communities. Then, Aurora’s guide to scholarships [now the Scholarships Portal] changed my life. I knew about the Rhodes Scholarship, however I didn’t consider that such scholarships were for the likes of me until I saw it in the guide. Being awarded a Rhodes Scholarship...would not have been possible without the support of Aurora.”
