Politics, Development and Democratic Education
Lilly Brown was told in Year 10 that she had plateaued in her studies and was not encouraged to continue to Year 12. Lilly refused to let the school determine what she was capable of achieving. In 2011, she participated in the Aurora Indigenous Scholars International Study Tour, visiting Oxford and Cambridge.
Lilly applied to, and was accepted by, both universities. As the first Indigenous Australian to study for a full‑time degree at Cambridge, she completed her Master’s in Politics, Development and Democratic Education in 2013 with Distinction – finishing in the top 10% at one of the five leading universities in the world.
“I had never even conceived of the possibility of attending prestigious educational institutions such as Oxford or Cambridge, particularly because where I grew up such an idea is so far removed from lived reality. I feel that this experience has allowed me to see, literally, a world of possibilities before me.”
