I was the first in my immediate family to attend university
I am a Kamilaroi woman and the first in my immediate family to attend university.
Whilst this was a daunting concept, it was also a powerful one. I always loved school so university seemed a natural choice for me. It can be a lonely place but there is support available, especially at the Indigenous centres on campus. Going to uni can be a big culture shock and having access to like-minded Aboriginal people was very important to me.
As this website shows, there are many scholarships available to Indigenous students. I strongly encourage you to apply for them. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with it all but you can achieve good results whilst still being involved in university life.
University education provides opportunities for you, your family and your community. After I graduated from The University of Sydney with a law degree, I became a solicitor with Legal Aid – a lifelong goal for me. Through my educational experiences I hope to make an impact on policy and service delivery in vulnerable communities.
University helped me achieve my goals, I have no doubt it will help you achieve yours.
