Applications are open for the Aurora Study Tour!
Now in its sixth year, the Aurora Indigenous Scholars International Study Tour is open for applications for the October/November 2017 Tour.
Beginning in 2011, the Study Tour has seen 100 Indigenous students and graduates visit leading international universities such as Cambridge, London Business School, London School of Economics, and Oxford, in the UK, and Berkeley, Columbia, Harvard, New York University, and Stanford in the US. Six of these have recently been ranked in the top 10 universities in the world.
“I found the classes to be incredibly engaging and was impressed by the eloquent and respectful manner exhibited by the students,” says Ashley Walker who belongs to La Perouse Aboriginal community and is a member of the Walbunga clan of the Yuin Nation, has since been accepted into both Oxford and Cambridge to study a Master of Business Administration.
“In addition to this, the Stanford class featured a panel discussion made up of leading venture capitalists who gave a real-life insight into entrepreneurship. Learning directly from these esteemed industry professionals was an amazing experience”.
The Study Tour has been an important step for prospective applicants. To date, of the 42 tour participants who have applied to the leading universities visited, 38 have been accepted into at least one of the universities.
Over the last 6 years, 36 scholarships have been awarded through the Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust or through the Roberta Sykes Indigenous Education Foundation to support these scholars in their studies overseas. So far 26 of these students have graduated – a 100% success rate – and 15 are still studying, 10 of whom are undertaking PhDs.
Do you want to take part in this amazing opportunity?
The Study Tour provides an invaluable opportunity for those contemplating postgraduate study abroad to travel with a group of like-minded students, visit leading universities, and meet with academics, administrators and current postgraduate students in your area of interest. The Study Tour is a great introduction to life as a postgraduate student at some of the world’s leading universities.
“While I had heard lots about Harvard’s Native student body and charter commitment to Native students, I couldn’t have anticipated their strength and adaptability! It blew me away. I have seen nothing like it in Australia. It has reaffirmed my desire to apply to Harvard,” says Alison Whittaker, Gomeroi woman and recent Fulbright scholar.
“I was already set on applying to Harvard for their Master of Laws (LLM) program. The visit has changed how I set my application apart and what I can envisage myself studying while completing the LLM. My visits with faculty were crucial in this”.
So, if you are a student or graduate of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, with strong academic performance at university and would like to pursue postgraduate study at one of the world’s leading universities, we would love to hear from you!
